A visit to Japan can be transformative, both in mind and body. Nachisan Shorekiji is a sacred place to either spend the day or rest for the night, as it is one of the few temples offering temple stays. Located in central Ayabe, only 70 minutes from Kyoto by train, Shorekiji is a place to learn about Japanese culture as well as yourself.

This temple is conveniently located within the city center, and is walking distance (2km) from Ayabe's train station. The Temple sits on a hill overlooking the Yura River that flows all the way out to the Sea of Japan. The temple includes a guest house, where visitors can spend the night and learn a variety of things from the head monk.

A stay at the temple comes with two meals as well as Zen practice. The head monk is an excellent chef and cooks a multi-course meal in the evening. He also has a separate kitchen with multiple stations and offers cooking classes.

Experiences offered at Shorekiji:
Zen practice and meditation (indoors)
Zen meditation (bamboo forest)
Zen meditation (Japanese maple setting, beautiful in fall)
"Nezen" (sleep meditation under a 600-year-old Japanese Zelkova tree)
cooking lessons
calligraphy and haiku
cold-water bathing/purification
forest hike
river kayaking

Nachisan Shorekiji is a beautiful temple and a wonderful place to retreat to. It is made ever more fantastic because of the amazing monk, Tamagawa Koshin. Along with his positive, calm, energy, he is an excellent chef, calligraphy specialist, and amazing guide
